Part 3

I woke up when I heard a rustling noise in my room. I got up and turned on the light. There was nothing there, of course, I was just still adjusting to the new house. My window was open earlier than it had been earlier though. I closed the window and looked out one more time. My mystery man was no longer there.

I curled up under my covers again and closed my eyes. But then I heard another noise. This one was a thump followed by various things falling out of my closet. I shot up and stared across the room towards my closet. My eyes couldn't see a thing through the blanket of darkness, but I could sense the presence of something, or somebody. I walked across the room, my eyes slowly adjusting to the darkness, with my arms reached out in front of me, as I fumbled to find the light switch. I turned on my closet light, no one was there, despite what my gut and the adrenaline rushing through my body were telling me.

But as I turned my light off, I saw something move near the window. It was a hand. There was a hand coming in from outside, closing my window. The thing that got me most was that my room was on the 6th floor of the building.

Nearly in tears from fear and shock, I ran over to the window and looked down, only to find a man with light brown hair and a leather jacket climbing down the building. My mystery man had returned.
I opened the window, which caught his attention, causing him to stop and look at me with piercing green eyes.

"I suppose I have to come up there now and explain myself or you're going to become extremely paranoid and drive yourself mentally insane, right?"

As he said it, he was chuckling, as if he thought that the whole situation was funny, when I was about half a second away from calling the police. But I couldn't help but notice how gorgeous he looked in the moonlight. Completely unsure of what was going on, I nodded my head and the second I did, he started climbing. I stepped back, giving him room to step in the room, like he had done it 100 times before.

"Before introduce myself, we have to get one thing straight, okay? I didn't steal anything and I didn't plan on hurting you, understand? I actually planned on waking you up and talking with you about something, but I chickened out."

All I could do was nod. I was in complete shock. There was a stranger in my room, that snuck into my window, and he wasn't here to hurt me or steal anything.

"My name is Nikolai. Sit down for this next part. You're looking a little pale already. I don't want you to pass out. You're in danger, nothing I can't protect you from, but still in danger. I just thought you had a right to know. Please stop crying. I've never really thought of myself as a sensitive guy so I really don't know how to comfort you."

"How am I in danger? Why do you even care? Does this have something to do with the accident and my family?" I really trusted this man. I don't even know why. I just felt like he had the answers to all of my questions.

"Whoa. Um, I don't know anything about your family or any accident. I don't really know anything about you. I don't really know how to tell you about the danger you're in or why I care without telling you too much, so I guess I'm going to have to. If I tell you, do you promise not to scream and/or tell anyone?"

"Yes. Well, I think so. I don't really have anyone that I would tell. And why would I want to tell anyone if I know that it's going to make you angry and you're the only person that I know of that can protect me from this 'danger'?"

"Good point. Well, and this is the part you can't scream for, I'm a vampire. Don't scream. Don't cry. Listen. That's all that I'm asking you, Sarah. Do you understand?"

My heart was beating so fast and I was having trouble controlling my tears. A vampire? They'd always just been fairytales. But something about him made me trust him anyway. "Yes, but how do you know my name?"

"I'm getting there. We can play 20 questions when I'm done explaining everything to you, okay? Okay. Which would you like me to explain first, the danger or how I know your name and why I care that you're in danger? Actually, I'm just going to explain the name part first."

"All vampires are born with a soul mate, someone to spend the rest of their lives with. Now, my father always told me that I would feel something the first time I saw my soul mate, but I always imagined it would be nice, like love at first sight. Then, from then on, I would always feel her emotions. I didn't know he meant literally. The first day I saw you, I felt an aching pain in my chest. It felt like someone had just stabbed me and tears were starting to well up in my eyes. I think I felt what you were feeling, but I can't imagine why anyone would feel like that."

"Well, after you find your soul mate, you're supposed to go to the king. Our king, King Kravchenko, supposedly talks to God, although I'm not sure I believe it, so he knows the names of your soul mate. You have to go confirm that you've found her though."

"So, I went to him to tell him that I thought I'd found my soul mate. He told me that I was correct and how strange it is that my soul mate is a human, especially a desirable one, which I'll explain in a minute. So he told me your name so that I could find you again. Do you understand so far?"

"I think so. So I'm your soul mate? And that's why you care that I'm in danger?"

"Yes and yes. Sarah, imagine this. You're 264 years old and you finally find your soul mate after being alone for over 200 years, then finding out her life is in serious danger. Imagine what would've happened if I didn't find you when I did. You would've died and I would've been alone forever."

"But getting to the danger part. I looked up your address in the school paperwork and when I was on my way over to see where it was and everything, I ended up somewhere that I shouldn't have been and found out something that I shouldn't have."

"In our vampire society, we feed off of 3 different kinds of people. There are some vamps that just feed off of regular humans. Some, feed off of other vampires. Then, there are les desirables. Les desirables are only meant for the king. Their blood is supposed to be the very best and their scent is supposed to be unimaginably sweet. Feeding off of one if you're not in the royal family is punishable by death. I've never a desirable one, until today. There are only about 20 of them in the city."

"Anyway, while I was on my way over to your house, my brother called me. He invited me to a meeting. He said that about 20 or 30 vamps were going to be there and that Xander had a great idea. Xander is the scum of our society. If there's any vampire that you absolutely want to stay away from, it's him. A few years ago, he drank his wife's blood until she died. He's a cold and heartless person."

"I keep getting sidetracked. So, I decided to go to the meeting for a little while because if I didn't I never would've heard the end of it from Sebastian. At the meeting there were about 60 vampires. Xander stood up on a table and started preaching about how it's not fair that the royal family is getting all of the good blood. He proposed that they kill all of the desirables so that the king will starve and Xander can take power."

"I've been outside your house sitting on that bench across the street ever since."
